There are three main milestones in SQL Server’s support for window functions. SQL Server 2005 introduced frameless aggregate window functions and ranking window functions. SQL Server 2012 introduced aggregate window functions with a frame, as well as offset and statistical window functions. SQL Server 2016 introduces support for the batch mode Window Aggregate operator, which significantly improves the performance of most window functions. This operator is the focus of this series of articles.
