Here’s a roundup of some of this week’s headlines from the cloud computing sector:
Nicera's Network Virtualization Powers Ebay. The recent VMware acquisition Nicira announced that one of its customers, eBay, is running Nicira’s Network Virtualization Platform (NVP) in a production OpenStack environment to rapidly test and deploy new Web applications. NVP enables rapid network reconfiguration without requiring changes to application or infrastructure components, which allows eBay to move research and development projects from development and test into production in minutes. “Rapid innovation lies at the heart of eBay’s business,” said JC Martin, Cloud Architect, eBay. “Working with Nicira, we have removed the last big barrier, the network, from creating computing resources on demand. We can now provide these resources in a minute versus hours or days. Not only do our best minds create new products and services more quickly, but we can also be more efficient and greener with our computing resources." eBay isn't the first company to announce this combination of Niciria and OpenStack, as DreamHost is running a similar platform.
CA Selected by ScaleMatrix. ScaleMatrix, a colocation, private cloud hosting, and managed services provider, has deployed CA Technologies' ARCserve to support its managed data security service that protects more than 100 terabytes of customer data for disaster recovery, business continuity and highly available business services. In order to provide data availability and service continuity ScaleMatrix needed a recovery management solution that would work across physical and virtual environments and a robust platform for simple cloud management. ARCserve forms the basis of a managed data security service and the CA AppLogic cloud platform supports ScaleMatrix private cloud services. “Our customers are under pressure to reduce IT spend while complying with regulations that impact the storage and management of data,” said James Heller, marketing director, ScaleMatrix. “To help our customers meet these goals, we need to ensure that our services combine data and system high availability with efficiency and cost-effectiveness.”
Nimbula Selected by EPAM Systems. Cloud operating system company Nimbula announced that EPAM Systems, a global software engineering and IT consulting provider, has implemented Nimbula Director. To enhance its delivery model, EPAM selected Nimbula Director to create a geographically distributed community cloud that addresses its need to increase its productivity, quality and cost-effectiveness of delivering services and project and infrastructure management. "EPAM tested several systems that claimed to be 'EC2-like,'" said Eli Feldman, Vice President of Cloud Solutions and Services at EPAM. "However, Nimbula Director provided a better solution out-of-the-box. Other systems were complex to install and configure, difficult to manage, not as reliable and priced unattractively. We liked the concept of having a product that included all functionality in one SKU at a competitive price. Federation to EC2 was a critical part of the project. For the past year, Nimbula provided exceptional support for their product."
