Q. Can System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2010 use remote storage that's accessed via Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) addresses or mapped drives?

A. DPM creates two volumes for each protection group: one for the current view of the protected data and one for old blocks that have been replaced but are kept around so that DPM can restore your data to previous points in time rather than just the latest backup. DPM can use any locally mounted storage, including direct attached storage and SAN-based storage connected via iSCSI or fiber. DPM can't use storage that has to be connected to via a UNC path or mapped drive.
