System Center Configuration Manager 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 Support

Q: What support for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 will be available for System Center Configuration Manager versions earlier than SCCM 2012 R2?

A: As would be expected, System Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2 will have full site system and client support for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. However, Microsoft is also adding support for 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 into earlier versions of Configuration Manager.

Added to Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 CU3:

  • Client support for Windows 8.1 Pro/Enterprise and Windows 2012 R2 Standard/Datacenter. Limited deployment support as the Windows 8.1 Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) isn't supported, which is required for patching an image, and more. Can be a Distribution Point.

  • Configuration Manager Site System roles are supported on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Added to Configuration Manager 2007 SP2:

  • Client support for Windows 8.1 Pro/Enterprise and Windows 2012 R2 Standard/Datacenter. NO deployment capabilities of the OS.

  • No Configuration Manager Site System role support on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Endpoint protection for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 will be provided by System Center 2012 R2 Endpoint Protection, System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection SP1, and Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 Update Rollup 1.

These details are all confirmed in the Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager team blog.
