Microsoft has removed media streaming services from Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and the Windows Server Essentials Experience role in in Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and Datacenter. But, you can get the function back with a download released on October 21, 2013.

I saw this yesterday, but after monitoring a thread on Twitter today, it seems to be more important to note than I originally thought.

Microsoft has removed media streaming services from Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and the Windows Server Essentials Experience role in in Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and Datacenter. But, you can get the function back with a download released on October 21, 2013.

The Windows Server Essentials Pack is a download to install to bring back the functionality, and offers the following features:

·         Streaming of media (photos, music and videos) to DLNA-compliant receivers

·         Smooth streaming to HTML5 HTML5-compliant browsers through by using Remote Web Access and to web service applications

·         UI elements associated with the configuration of media streaming in the Windows Server Essentials Dashboard
