Cloud Computing: Examples of Adoption update from June 2012

The topic of cloud computing has been discussed for years, but the technology is maturing rapidly, with an increasing number of enterprises actually using clouds in production, whether they be public or private. As cloud technologists prepare for  a major cloud conference in New York next week, Cloud Expo, we thought we'd look back at our recent coverage of the Cloud Connect conference, which generated some stories covering significant cloud topics:

The Bottom-Up Nature of Cloud Adoption
Geva Perry, an industry veteran and author of Thinking Out Cloud, was one of the keynoters at Cloud Connect in Santa Clara. He said if you want to learn about a company’s adoption of cloud computing, don’t ask the CIO. He might be the last to know. That’s why surveys of CIOs tend to show meaningfully lower cloud adoption than similar surveys of developers. Cloud adoption is happening at the grassroots level within organizations.

The Accidental Healthcare Cloud
When the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston adopted electronic health records in 2007, it needed to find a way to include its physicians in the effort. That was a substantial challenge, since this meant creating a system that could work for 1,500 doctors in 300 offices in eastern Massachusetts. And it was critical that they get it right. This is the story of the "accidental" healthcare cloud.

Anticipating the Perfect Storm of Impossible Events
Jesse Robbins of Opscode, a company that provides automation software, says that resiliency is a function of culture as well as engineering. "You cannot learn the lessons of failure without experiencing it," said Robbins. That's can be difficult message for IT operations team that view downtime as an enemy to be avoided at all costs."

Zynga Data Centers Power zCloud, New Platform
Zynga launched new web gaming platform recently and has become the poster child for hybrid cloud platforms. Zynga uses a combination of in-house data centers with the public cloud. In the process, it has become a major player in the market for wholesale data center space.
