Cross Platform Data Roadshows
Kevin talks about working with both Oracle and SQL Server.
October 1, 2006
Early in my career, I spent a lot of time designing and developing applications that ran against the Oracle database. As time went on, I eventually moved more and more into SQL Server. But I had to learn everything the hard way. There were very few books about Oracle when I was transitioning between the technologies in 1994 and 1995 and even fewer books about SQL Server. There were so few, in fact, that I was inspired (some might say provoked) to write "Transact-SQL Programming" as a sort of protege work to the incomparable "PL/SQL Programming " written by Steven Feuerstein.
Things aren't nearly as tough now. There's lots of great books and information to be had on both Oracle and SQL Server. And in case you haven't figured this out yourself, having a working knowledge of both platforms is an enormous competitive advantage in today's job market. What's the best way to bootstrap your skill set, though, if you want to add Oracle to your already considerable (or maybe not so considerable) SQL Server skills?
I want to take a minute to let you know about the 2006 Cross Platform Data Roadshow, an event for DBAs featuring the latest in 64-bit database computing, database mirroring, BI, and high-availability for SQL Server and Oracle platforms. The Cross Platform Data roadshows are coming to a city near you (below) and will feature speakers from Scalability Experts, Solid Quality Learning, and Intel presenting practical, real-world information you can use immediately. Find out all the details about this event by visiting www.windowsitpro.com/go/sql or by calling 866-203-2770.
