Windows Vista, Bluetooth, and the Internet

Vista has a built-in Bluetooth stack that makes it easy to connect to the Internet through your data-compatible phone. The first step is to connect the phone to your Vista computer.

1.Start the Bluetooth Devices Control Panel applet (Start, Control Panel, Bluetooth Devices).

2.Under the Devices tab, click Add.

3.The Bluetooth Add Device wizard will open. Select the “My device is set up and ready to be found” check box and click Next. (Make sure your phone is configured to be discoverable to other devices, which is not usually the default.)

4.The Bluetooth wizard will now search for devices in its proximity. Once the search is complete, select your device from the list and click Next.

5.You’ll be prompted for a passkey; leave the default of “Choose a passkey for me” and click Next.

6.On the phone, you’ll see a message that a computer wants a partnership. Click OK and enter the passkey that’s displayed on the computer. Click Finish on the PC wizard to finish the partnership setup.

Next, you need to configure the dial-up connection. To do so, perform these steps:

1.Start the Network and Sharing Center (Start, Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center).

2.Select “Set up a connection or network.”

3.Select “Set up a dial-up connection” from the list of network types.

4.Select the Bluetooth modem entry.

5.Enter details for the connection. In the case of Cingular, all you need to enter is a number of “*99#”, then click Connect shows.

You’re now connected to the Internet through your phone.
