Monopoly Envy

Computerworld reports on June 13, 2005, that Oracle CEO Larry Ellison has launched a new company that provides storage-area network (SAN) and network-attached storage (NAS) capability in a sleek array. According to Computerworld, Pillar Data Systems' Axiom product is already garnering applause from early adopters.

Meanwhile, in the same issue, Computerworld reports Oracle Corp's acquisition of yet another database application company, TimesTen, which makes performance-boosting software. Back in April, after Oracle's takeover of PeopleSoft, our own Mike Otey presented plenty of good reasons that database vendors should stay out of the application space. Bet they apply to hardware, too.
