Microsoft began a public beta test of a new Web site that will unify thethree existing "portal" sites it now maintains. A portal site--like Yahoo,Netscape Netcaster, or Microsoft's existing "Start" sites--provide userswith a one-stop homepage that they can customize. Microsoft's new portalsite, which will retain the "Start" title, will be finalized by the end ofthe year. It includes a sleeker look, free email via the Microsoft HotMailservice, easy search engine access, and all kinds of news feeds.
