Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 826900 contains the following SYMPTOMS:

When you use the NTDSUTIL utility (Ntdsutil.exe) to remove an orphaned domain, the domain name is listed with DEL: as part of the value, and you may receive the following error message:

Dsremovedsdomainw error with code 0x2077.

Additionally, when you use the ADSI Edit snap-in to remove the orphaned domain object from the Active Directory directory service, you may receive the following error message:

Illegal modify operation. Some aspect of the modification is not permitted.
