When you search for updates on the Windows Update Web site from Windows XP, you receive:

0xc80003fA

This behavior occurs if you are unable to access the %SystemRoot%SoftwareDistribution folder.

To resolve this behavior:

01. Open a CMD.EXE window.

02. Type following commands, pressing Enter after each line:

net stop wuauservrename "%SystemRoot%SoftwareDistribution" SDoldnet start wuauserv

03. Start Internet Explorer.

04. Use the Tools menu to select Internet Options.

05. On the General tab, in the Temporary Internet files area, press the Delete Cookies button.

06. Press OK.

07. Press the Delete Files button.

08. Check the Delete all offline content box and press OK.

09. In the History area, press the Clear History button.

10. Press Yes when you are prompted to delete the history.

11. Press OK.
