How do I shrink a volume in Windows Vista?

A. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 introduce the ability to shrink volumes through the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Disk Management snap-in. If you select the Shrink Volume option, the Disk Management interface will ascertain the amount of space at the end of the disk that’s available to be shrunk, and you can select the actual amount to shrink. To shrink a disk, perform the following steps:
1. Start the MMC Computer Management interface by selecting Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, Computer Management.
2. Expand Storage, Disk Management in the navigation panel.
3. Right-click the volume you want to shrink, and select Shrink Volume from the context menu.
4. The maximum amount of space by which to shrink is displayed and selected by default. You can modify the amount of space to shrink. After making your selection, click Shrink.
5. Once complete, a block of unallocated space will be displayed after the shrunk volume, which can now be used by another volume.
