Creative Labs, makers of the ubiquitous SoundBlaster line of sound cards, are working with Microsoft to create new versions of DirectSound and DirectSound 3D, the sound components of DirectX. DirectX is a set ofprogramming interfaces that allows developers to more easily create gamesthat run on Windows and Windows NT.

Creative Labs will implement support for the new DirectX extensions acrossits entire line of PCI sound cards. Developers that use these extensionswill be able to create high-quality 3D sound effects and audio that can beplayed with any PC external speakers.

"We applaud Creative's efforts in working with us and the rest of the industry to build these standardized extensions to Microsoft's DirectSoundAPIs," said Kevin Bachus, product manager for DirectX at Microsoft. "By helping extend the DirectSound standard, Creative has ensured a simple yetcompelling solution for developers and consumers.
