The bug in Microsoft Access 97--which can also afflict Access 2.0 and 95users--has been traced to a flaw in Microsoft's "Jet" database engine, thesoftware that handles Access database functions under the hood. The bugcan strike when the user is accessing an Access form with many differentrecords opened simultaneously and it is specifically tied to the use of acombo box control which, when used in this condition, can cause data fromone record to overwrite data in another.

Microsoft denied on Tuesday that the bug affected older versions of Accessbut confirmed that charge today. A workaround to this bug--which does notafflict other products that use Jet, such as Visual Basic and Visual C++, was posted earlier this week in WinInfo. Microsoft is still working on apermanent fix for the bug
