Internet Security Systems (ISS) announced BlackICE Agent for Workstations 3.1, a combination firewall and Intrusion Detection System (IDS) that analyzes network activity on servers, workstations, and network segments that VPN connections use. The product can protect mobile users, remote users, and systems inside a network perimeter. Users can deploy and configure the software remotely. BlackICE Agent for Workstations 3.1 sends logged information to a centralized ICEcap Manage console for monitoring and review.

"While remote access can be a great enabler for extending network resources, there are numerous issues to consider to make it cost effective and secure," said Greg Gilliom, vice president of product development at ISS. "A common concern is that of securing a VPN connection based on the overall security of the remote machine. Without this security, new automated threats, such as Code Red, Nimda, and Goner worms, can attack the remote machine and then use the remote machine’s VPN connection to propagate into the corporate network and all its assets. ISS’ VPN protection solution provides remote users a direct defense against this type of malicious attack."

The new version protects popular VPNs, including CheckPoint VPN-1 SecuRemote 4.1; CiscoSecure 1.1/IRE SafeNet/Soft-PK 2.1.2; Cisco VPN Client 2.5, 3.03, and 3.1.1; Indus River RiverPilot 2.0; Intel NetStructure VPN Client 6.80, 6.81, 6.9, and 7.0; Microsoft VPN; Nortel Networks Extranet Access Client 2.60.56 and 2.62; PGPnet 6.5.3; SonicWall VPN Client 5.0.1; and VPNet VPNremote Client 2.51 and 3.0.

Pricing for BlackICE Agent for Workstations 3.1 starts at $2075 for 25 desktop agents and $415 for first-year maintenance. Users can buy the management platform for the solution separately.
