Quantum has released qualification units that will upgrade its Super DLTtape backup technology to 320GB. The new backup device will be called SDLT 320. The qualification units will demonstrate the specification for SDLT 320 and will help backup-drive vendors design units based on the technology.

SDLT 320 technology will increase Super DLTtape devices to a per-cartridge capacity of 320GB compressed or 160GB native. SDLT 320 drives will offer a transfer rate of 32MBps or 16MBps native. Quantum expects to make SDLT 320 products available in second quarter 2002.

SDLT devices can read and write DLT and SDLT tapes. SDLT 220 drives are currently available and offer a capacity of 220GB or 110GB native and a native transfer rate of 22MBps or 11MBps. In a recent survey by Millward Brown IntelliQuest and Quantum, 63 percent of surveyed IT professionals use DLTtape and Super DLTtape products as their primary tape-backup storage solution. Many vendors offer DLT and SDLT devices and tapes--vendors such as Advanced Digital Information Corporation (ADIC), BreeceHill Technologies, Compaq, Dell, Fujifilm, Hewlett-Packard (HP), IBM, LaCie, Maxwell, Overland Data, Qualstar, Quantum, Quantum/ALT, StorageTek, Sun Microsystems, and Tandberg Data.
