How to Type the Infinity (∞) Symbol

It doesn’t take forever to insert the infinity symbol or sign (∞) into a Microsoft Word document, on a Mac, or on iOS and Android devices.

How To Insert the Infinity Symbol in Microsoft Word

When using Microsoft Word on a PC, click to the place in your document where you would like to place the infinity symbol. Next, hold the Alt key and type the numbers 236.  

Microsoft Word’s Advanced Symbols library is another place to find the infinity symbol. You can access the Advanced Symbols library under the Insert tab. Once you access the library, double-click the infinity symbol to include it in your document.

If you plan on using the infinity symbol multiple times in a Microsoft Word document, you can adjust your AutoCorrect options to automatically replace a word (such as “infinity”) with the symbol. 

How To Insert the Infinity Symbol on a Mac

The keyboard shortcut is the easiest way to type the infinity symbol on a Mac. Hold Option, followed by the number 5. This keyboard shortcut works in most applications, including Pages, Notes, Google Docs, and Microsoft Word.

You can also insert the infinity symbol from your Mac’s Character Viewer. To do this, find Emoji & Symbols under the Edit menu. Search for “infinity” or scroll to the section heading Letterlike Symbols. Double-click the infinity symbol or highlight and drag the symbol into your document.

How To Insert the Infinity Symbol on a Mobile Device

Typing the infinity symbol is just as easy to do from the keyboard of an IOS or Android device.

On an iPhone, the infinity symbol is found in the Emoji Library. Switch to the emoji keyboard by clicking on the smiley face icon. Next, type “infinity” into the Search Emoji bar. Click on the infinity symbol that appears. 

On an Android device, the infinity symbol can be found in the numbers and symbols keyboard. Once you’ve switched to the numbers and symbols keyboard, tap on the infinity symbol.
