How to Type the Degree (°) Symbol

It’s simple to insert the degree symbol, whether you’re using Microsoft Word, a Mac, or an iOS or Android device. Learn the different methods.

It’s no sweat to insert the degree symbol or sign (°) into a Microsoft Word document, on a Mac, and on iOS and Android devices with keyboard shortcuts.

How to Insert the Degree Symbol in Microsoft Word

If you’re using Microsoft Word on a PC, place your cursor where you want to insert the degree symbol to go in the document. Next, hold the Alt key and type the numbers 0176.

You can also find the degree symbol in Microsoft Word’s Advanced Symbols library. Access the library under the Insert tab, then simply double-click the symbol to include it in your document.

Lastly, if you are planning to use the degree symbol frequently in a Microsoft Word document, you can edit your AutoCorrect options to automatically replace a word (such as “Degree”) with the symbol. 

How to Insert the Degree Symbol on a Mac

The easiest way to type the degree symbol on a Mac is the keyboard shortcut: Option + Shift + 8. This keyboard shortcut works in most applications, including Pages, Notes, Google Docs, and Microsoft Word.

You can also insert the degree symbol from your Mac’s Character Viewer. To access the Character Viewer, find Emoji & Symbols under the Edit menu. Search for “degree” or scroll to the section heading Letterlike Symbols.

You can either double-click the degree symbol or highlight and drag the symbol into your text.

How to Type the Degree Symbol on a Mobile Device

Inserting the degree symbol is just as easy to do from the keyboard of an IOS or Android device.

On an iPhone, tap the “123” option on the keyboard to show the numerical keypad. Holding down “0” will reveal the degree symbol. 

On Android, open the numbers and symbols keyboard and tap on the degree symbol.
