Multivendor Storage Management Demonstrated at Storage Networking World

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) announced and demonstrated the first common interface for storage management of multivendor solutions at the Storage Networking World conference last week. The interface is based on the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) Common Information Model (CIM) and Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) technology. The demonstrations included showcases featuring volume management, LUN masking and mapping, asset management, and status and event monitoring using clients and servers from the participating manufacturers.

SNIA's new interface is one of many current efforts by the storage industry to develop technology that lets customers use and manage storage technology from different vendors in their environments. Companies showing off solutions using CIM and WBEM technology included AppIQ, Brocade Communications Systems, Crossroads Systems, EMC, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), Prisa Networks, QLogic, Quantum, Spectra Logic, StorageTek, Sun Microsystems, and VERITAS Software. Products with CIM and WBEM support will begin to ship late this year.
