What is the Windows 2000 MultiLanguage Version?

A. The Windows 2000 MultiLanguage Version is a Win2K Professional, Server, and Advanced Server add-on that lets one Win2K installation display menus and dialog boxes in different languages. This add-on eliminates the need to install language-specific Win2K versions, simplifying a global Win2K roll-out, especially in multilingual organizations. The add-on is especially useful on Win2K Server Terminal Services servers because each remote connection can then use a different set of menus and dialog boxes!

A system running the Win2K MultiLanguage Version will look and behave much like the local version except that the following items remain in the "master" language of the system: all 16-bit code, bitmaps, registry keys and values, folders and file names, and INF files.

To use the Win2K MultiLanguage Version, install Win2K as usual, then perform the following steps:

  1. Insert the MultiLanguage File Installation CD-ROM.

  2. The file installation should run automatically; if it doesn't, run muisetup.exe on the root of the CD-ROM.

  3. Check the languages you want to install (Microsoft will add more languages in the future):

    • Chinese (Simplified)

    • Chinese (Traditional)

    • Dutch

    • English

    • French

    • German

    • Italian

    • Japanese

    • Korean

    • Spanish

    • Swedish

  4. Select the default language for current and new users.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Muisetup.exe will install additional fonts, dictionaries, help files, and DLLs.

  7. Click OK in response to the "Installation complete" message.

  8. Click Yes to reboot the system. Any problems will be logged to the %systemroot%muisetup.log file (in the current language).
