Dot Hill Puts EMC'S New Software Claims in Doubt

Last week, EMC announced an enhancement to its PowerPath software that includes "industry-first" feature full end-to-end automated path fail-over for networked storage environments. PowerPath's "SAN aware" will automate path failover through the server, network switch, and storage system. In case of a failure, the server will continue to process I/O requests to an alternate fibre channel adapter on the EMC Symmetrix Enterprise storage system.

Shortly after EMC announced its new features, Dot Hill, a storage networking company, announced that EMC's claims were false. In September 1999, Dot Hill introduced a product called SANpath, which supports fully redundant I/O paths throughout a Storage Area Network (SAN) and automatic transparent failover.

The increasing popularity of SAN in enterprises has made transparent failover an important feature. As of press time, EMC hasn't returned our requests for comment.
