VMware Officially Launches DaaS for Partners

On day one of VMware's Partner Exchange 2014, the company has officially announced the launch of their Desktop-as-a-Service technology, now called VMware Horizon DaaS Platform. The new platform comes just four short months after the acquisition of Desktone in October 2013.

The platform is targeted toward VMware partners, giving them the ability to easily build DaaS solutions for customers. Sumit Dhawan, VP and GM of Desktop at VMware, states that VMware's goal for DaaS is simple – to provide a scalable, low cost DaaS cloud that partners can leverage to provide an end-to-end software platform to serve customers.

The idea behind running a desktop in the Cloud is that business users can use any device (laptops, iPad, Kindle Fire, and Android tablets) to spin up a virtual computing environment and have access to a standard business desktop. This gives them access to documents, applications and resources, just as if they were sitting in the office, their hand attached to a desk by the mouse cord.

Amazon announced its own DaaS in November 2013, called Amazon Workspaces.
