Symantec Merges Nine Security Products into One, Retires the Others

It was a long time coming, but Symantec is finally working to simplify its security offerings.

With the number of cybercrimes increasing, it's tough sometimes to figure out the best solutions to help ward off potential attacks. Over the years, Symantec has had a habit of acquiring companies and instead of integrating products, simply adding to its growing catalog of solutions. As we're all aware, in a lot of cases, acquired products just seemed to disappear into thin air overnight.

To make things easier for customers, Symantec has set out on a plan to retire legacy products and merge its remaining products into a single service simply called: Norton Security.

Norton Security will stand as the primary security offering, giving customers the ability to choose a single solution.

Here's what's happening:

  1. Nine products merged into a single solution.

  2. Norton Security will be available with and without Cloud backup.

  3. Norton Security will be subscription-based and managed through the Cloud.

  4. Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiVirus, and Norton360 will be retired.

  5. Norton Security is currently in public beta and calendared to release in the fall.

If you're interested, you can join the public beta of the new Norton Security solution by downloading from the Norton Security Beta web site: http://us.norton.com/ns-beta

The public beta touts and improved UI, a revamped anti-malware engine, modern protection features, and better performance. If you've ever been a Symantec security product customer, the promise of better performance alone is worth checking it out.

There's growing concern that antivirus is dead and is no longer valuable in the modern world. We'll see if Symantec's brave, new offerings can bring the company back into security relevance. Symantec: http://www.symantec.com
