Microsoft Extends Windows 8.1 Update 1 Deadline for Consumers

What we affectionately call Windows 8.1 Update 1, but Microsoft calls just "Update" is getting a little more life for consumers.

Today, Microsoft is announcing that consumers will get an additional 30 days to install the update. Enterprise customers already have a 90-day extension, so it's no surprise that Microsoft would extend the date for consumers. Once the 30 days is up, the update will become mandatory. Without Update 1 installed, no further security updates will be provided, essentially bringing standard Windows 8.1 to its end of life.

Microsoft states the reason to mandate Update 1 is to ensure that all customers are running the most up-to-date OS level. Update 1, of course, brings better mouse and keyboard functionality to Windows 8.x, which has long been sought after by consumers and businesses alike.
