August Patch Tuesday Will Bring 9 Bulletins Affecting Windows, Internet Explorer, SQL Server, SharePoint and Office

Microsoft today has released its regularly scheduled advanced notification of the updates it will release as part of the monthly patching process. IT organizations affectionately refer to the monthly anniversary as Patch Tuesday (some say Black Tuesday) while Microsoft has recently started attempting to change that to "Update Tuesday." I guess that shows that marketing touches even the most mundane things at Microsoft these days.

No matter what you decide to call it, it's happening again on August 12, 2014. This month's updates cover a wide range of critical and important fixes for Windows client and server, Internet Explorer, Office, SQL Server, and the .NET Framework.

Here's what to expect:

Bulletin 1 – Critical – Remote Code Execution – Internet Explorer

Bulletin 2 – Critical – Remote Code Execution – Windows

Bulletin 3 – Important – Remote Code Execution – Office

Bulletin 4 – Important – Elevation of Privilege – SQL Server

Bulletin 5 – Important – Elevation of Privilege – Windows

Bulletin 6 – Important – Elevation of Privilege – Windows

Bulletin 7 – Important – Elevation of Privilege – Windows Server Software (SharePoint)

Bulletin 8 – Important – Security Feature Bypass - .NET Framework

Bulletin 9 – Important – Security Feature Bypass – Windows

For those bulletins targeting Windows, all supported versions of Windows are affected including Windows Server 2003 through Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Vista through Windows 8.1.

For Office, only OneNote 2007 with service pack 3 is affected.

All SQL Server versions 2008 through 2014 are included in proposed updates.

The SharePoint update covers SharePoint Server 2013 and 2013 with service pack 1.

Finally, Windows Media Center for Windows Vista is getting a patch and is listed as critical.
