When you start your Windows 2000-based server, the Routing and Remote Access service does NOT start.

If you check the service, it shows as Stopping.

If you try to start the service, you see various error messages.

You may not be able to connect to computers on your LAN, or browse the Web.

Strange as it seems, this problem can be the result of having Veritas Backup Exec installed. A conflict between the Veritas tape device driver and RRAS may prevent the service from starting.

To resolve this problem, replace the Veritas tape device driver with an updated 3rd party driver, or if appropriate for your tape device, with the standard Microsoft driver.

To update a 3rd party device driver, use the manufactures instructions.

To update to a Windows standard tape driver:

01. Start / Run / Devmgmt.msc / OK.

02. Expand Tape Drives.

03. Right-click the tape device and press Properties.

04. Select the Driver tab.

05. Press Update Driver.

06. Press Next in the Upgrade Device Driver wizard.

07. Select Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver.

08. Select Show compatible hardware.

09. If your tape drive is compatible with on of the following, a compatible model will be listed, ELSE, you must use a 3rd party driver:

Tape drive types Tape Driver4mm tape drive, 4 millimeter DAT drive 4mmdat.sys IDE QIC tape drive, IDE (QIC-157) tape drive Qic157.sys SCSI mini-QIC tape drive, SCSI mini cartridge drive Miniqic.sys

10. Restart your computer.
