Symantec Corporation announced on Thursday that it would be purchasingQuarterdeck Corporation for approximately $65 million, including the remainder of Quarterdeck's debt. Quarterdeck, a maker of software utilitiesfor Windows, has fallen on hard times lately. Symantec is most famous forits collection of Windows utilities that are marketed under the "Norton"name.

"Quarterdeck is an industry pioneer that has developed many market-leadingtechnologies," said Symantec President and CEO Gordon Eubanks. "We expectto further increase our technical leadership in desktop and enterprise utilities by integrating Quarterdeck's technology with ours, and continuingto deliver superior products to customers under the Norton brand.
