Windows 10 CB Updated to Build 10586.420 with Cumulative Update KB3163018

The June 2016 Cumulative Update pushes the Current Branch of Windows 10 to Build 10586.420 and provides security updates, bug fixes and performance improvements.

Windows 10 CB Updated to Build 10586.420 with Cumulative Update KB3163018

Today Microsoft released their monthly round of security related updates for all of their operating systems for this month's edition of Patch Tuesday.

Among those patches available there was a cumulative update for Windows 10 Current Branch (Build 10586.318) on PCs and Mobile devices.

The cumulative update, designated as KB3163018, bumps the Current Branch build to 10586.420 and si also accompanied by KB3149135 which is a servicing stack update for Windows 10 Version 1511. Version 1511 is also known as the November Update and was the last major release of Windows 10.

As for the cumulative update, according to Microsoft it addresses the following areas:

  • Improved reliability of Internet Explorer 11, Microsoft Edge, Cortana, audio playback, audio playback in Groove Music app, Maps app, Miracast, and Windows Explorer.

  • Fixed issue with balloon tip notifications always appearing in the upper left side of the screen.

  • Fixed issue that caused VPN to not work properly when switching between different network interfaces (for example, switching between Wi-Fi and cellular).

  • Improved Narrator’s ability to read bulleted lists, hyperlinks, and image information.

  • Fixed issue in location that caused navigation apps to lag behind user’s actual location.

  • Improved performance of loading webpages in Internet Explorer 11 when roaming user profiles are used.

  • Fixed issue that caused phones to stop ringing from an incoming call, if interrupted by an SMS.

  • Fixed issue that caused some phones to be unable to re-add a primary Microsoft account without resetting after upgrading from Windows Phone 8.1.

  • Fixed additional issues with Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 11, Bluetooth, Cortana, Wi-Fi, Windows Camera app, revised daylight saving time, USB, TPM, Graphics, Group Policy, downloading music or movies purchased through the Windows Store, Network Diagnostics and Windows Explorer.

  • Fixed security issues with Internet Explorer 11, Microsoft Edge, Server Message Block (SMB) Server, Microsoft Graphics Component, Group Policy, DNS Server, Windows Diagnostic Hub, Kernel mode drivers, Microsoft Windows PDF, Windows Structured Query, Adobe Flash Player, JScript and VBScript, and Web Proxy Autodiscovery Protocol (WPAD).

Since this is also labeled a security update that means it includes patches that address security related issues in Windows 10 Version 1511.

  • 3163622 MS16-072: Security update for Group Policy: June 14, 2016

  • 3164028 MS16-073: Security update for kernel mode drivers: June 14, 2016

  • 3164036 MS16-074: Security Update for Microsoft graphics component: June 14, 2016

  • 3164038 MS16-075: Security Update for Windows SMB Server: June 14, 2016

  • 3165191 MS16-077: Security update for Web Proxy Autodiscovery (WPAD): June 14, 2016

  • 3165479 MS16-078: Security update to Windows Diagnostic Hub: June 14, 2016

  • 3164302 MS16-080: Security update for Microsoft Windows PDF: June 14, 2016

  • 3165270 MS16-082: Security update for Windows Structured Query: June 14, 2016

Windows 10 will download this update automatically and begin the install wrapping up with a prompt for a restart or you can go ahead to Settings>Update & security>Windows Update to start the installation.

Of note, I do have one system that was on the Release Preview Ring and running Build 10586.338 that is refusing to install this month's cumulative update. I am troubleshooting that and will update this if I figure out a work around/resolution.

Since the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is expected at the end of next month this is likely not the last Cumulative Update for Version 1511 of Windows 10 prior to the release of Version 1607.
