Windows 10 Build 10240 receives two more updates

With just 5 days left until the General Availability of Windows 10 the Windows team is likely burning the midnight oil in Redmond at the companies headquarters.

Just look to last night, just after 11:30 PM on the East coast of the United States, when Gabe Aul tweets that a new cumulative update was pushed to Windows Update for Insiders on build 10240 of Windows 10.

Perusing Twitter it appears that two updates may have actually been pushed to Insiders. One is KB3074679 and the other is KB3074686. I immediately received KB30746779 last night on all of my Windows 10 machines but KB3074686 just appeared in Windows Update this morning.

Here is the break down on these two updates:

KB3074686 - This update improves the Windows 10 out-of-box experience (OOBE). This update applies only to the Windows 10 OOBE process and will be available only at the time that OOBE updates are installed.

KB3074679 - This security update resolves the following vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows:

  • The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted document or visits an untrusted webpage that contains embedded OpenType fonts. To learn more about the vulnerability, see Microsoft Security Bulletin MS15-078.

  • The vulnerability impacts Adobe Flash Player in Internet Explorer. To learn more about the vulnerability, see Microsoft security advisory 2755801 and Adobe Security bulletin APSB15-18.

  • The vulnerability could allow elevation of privilege if the Windows Installer service incorrectly runs custom action scripts.

Additionally, this update includes non–security-related changes to enhance the functionality of Windows 10 through new features and improvements.

Unfortunately, that last line is the most details we have been seeing from Microsoft with the various updates that have been pushed out to Windows 10 Build 10240 since it was released.

While I hope we will see more detailed info about any updates to Windows 10 after 29 July I am not holding my breath for it either.  Seems detailed release notes are a rarity these days across the board.

But, wait...there's probably more so be sure to follow me on Twitter and Google+.
