Enterprise Mode for IE11 to Get Emulation Support for Even Older Versions of IE in November

Hopefully, you've already read about Enterprise Mode for IE11 (EMIE). If not, EMIE is a feature that allows organizations to manage web site compatibility. It gives IT administrators the ability to force IE11 to work like an earlier version of Internet Explorer where specific web sites, Intranet site, or web apps require it to work properly. I'll leave some links to learn more about EMIE at the bottom of this article, if you're just hearing about it.

When first released, Enterprise Mode for IE11 only supported IE8 and above. Now, Microsoft is getting ready to add more backward compatibility to support IE11 running like IE5, IE7, IE8, IE9, and IE10. This month, as part of November's Patch Tuesday, Microsoft is planning to push out this update.

The capability to make IE11 appear as an earlier version of Internet Explorer, and to force Web apps to render in any document mode should help to further ease compatibility concerns for companies. A lot of companies are interested in Windows 10, and it might not be overtly obvious that IE11 technologies will still be present in the upcoming release of Microsoft's new operating system. Providing backward compatibility for web apps and web sites through EMIE is only a stop-gap measure. While waiting for Windows 10 to release, companies should take the opportunity to fix compatibility issues because, unless addressed, those issues will still exist when Windows 10 arrives.
