App Tour: View 3D for Windows 10 Redstone 2 (Creators Update)

When Microsoft announced the Creators Update for Windows 10 back in October, one of the tag lines for this third major Feature Update for Windows 10 was 3D for everyone.

The first element of that 3D experience for the Creators Update, code named Redstone 2 while it is in development, was the availability of the Paint 3D Preview app and introduction of the Remix3D.com Community for sharing 3D models.

The next stage of 3D for everyone in the Creators Update was delivered this week alongside of a huge update for testers in Windows 10 Build 14986.

The View 3D app preview is a new inbox app that can be used to view 3D models that are in 3MF, PLY, OBJ, FBX, and STL formats. Using the View 3D app lets you pan, zoom, and manipulate your view of the 3D model using touch, pen, or your keyboard.

There are links in this app once a model is loaded for quick access to the Remix3D.com community or to take a displayed 3D model and open it up in Paint 3D.

As you will see in this demo video (embedded below) there is an automatic turntable setting that will rotate your displayed 3D model in View 3D which is a nice way to check it out.

If you want to find a few models that are compatible with the View 3D app you can check out NASA's very cool collection of models at https://nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov/models.

I served for 29 plus years in the U.S. Navy and retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer in November 2011. My work background in the Navy was telecommunications related so my hobby of computers fit well with what I did for the Navy. I consider myself a tech geek and enjoy most things in that arena.

My first website – AnotherWin95.com – came online in 1995. Back then I used GeoCities Web Hosting for it and WindowsObserver.com is the result of the work I have done on that site since 1995.

In January 2010 my community contributions were recognized by Microsoft when I received my first Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Award for the Windows Operating System. Since then I have been renewed as a Microsoft MVP each subsequent year since that initial award. I am also a member of the inaugural group of Windows Insider MVPs which began in 2016.

I previously hosted the Observed Tech PODCAST for 10 years and 317 episodes and now host a new podcast called Faith, Tech, and Space.

I began contributing to Penton Technology websites in January 2015 and in April 2017 I was hired as the Senior Content Producer for Penton Technology which is now Informa Tech. In that role, I contribute to ITPro Today and cover operating systems, enterprise technology, and productivity.
