As companies continue to increase their use of video—for training, marketing and other purposes—the process of managing that video can be daunting. Panopto has released a new app for SharePoint that is designed to fill some of the collaboration platform's video-shaped holes and make it easier and more efficient for users to store and find video content.
In a blog post, Panopto notes that when SharePoint was released, in 2001, most content was text-based, there were no smartphones as we know them today, and very few people had broadband access.
"Fast forward 14 years," states the post. "Video now makes up more than two-thirds of all internet traffic. Employees are 75 percent more likely to watch a video than to read documents, emails or web articles. And by the end of next year, Gartner estimates that employees in large enterprises will watch 45 minutes of business video every working day."
The problem, posits Panopto, is that SharePoint hasn't caught up when it comes to video.
Panopto has released an update to its video capture and management software including a SharePoint app that acts as a video content management system. The Panopto SharePoint app enables users to, among other things, more easily store video in a way that makes it easy for others to find and access that content later on.
The new SharePoint app provides organizations with the ability to:
Securely embed videos and playlists in SharePoint pages using SSO
Upload and manage videos from within SharePoint
Automatically transcode videos for playback on any device
Stream live and on-demand video across the corporate WAN and Internet
Launch Panopto recording and webcasting software from within SharePoint
Access video analytics and editing capabilities
The Panopto software platform provides 60fps video streaming capabilities, live Webcasting to iOS devices, search federation (via the OpenSearch standard) and support for content approval workflows.
In October, Panopto was named a “leader” in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for enterprise video content management. In a report, Gartner praised the software’s rich search, ability to capture video from a variety of sources, strong integration with Lync, and a simple and direct pricing model (based on number of creators and number of hours delivered). Gartner also lauded the platform’s integration with SharePoint, but noted that its integration levels are more limited with other portals.
The Panopto app is available in the Office Store. It is free to users of the Panopto platform.
