by David Chernicoff, [email protected] One of the most difficult problems with managing storage--especially for small-to-midsized businesses (SMBs)--is assuring that the network is consistently backed up. This includes allowing enough time to perform data backups, rotating tapes properly, and operating with little to no interruption of the normal business workflow. These tasks can easily overwhelm an SMB and can often result in a failure to perform regular backups. HP, which is traditionally known for its enterprise-class storage systems, is making a serious effort to get the attention of SMBs through the release of its HP StorageWorks D2D Backup System. For less than $3000, SMBs can implement a comprehensive disk-to-disk backup system that supports 1TB (D2D110) or 2TB (D2D120) of storage and up to four Windows servers, while integrating with existing tape-backup methodologies. Unlike other SMB-targeted storage systems that HP has released since third quarter 2006, HP D2D Backup System is the first product that's really suitable for the small business. Other products have been targeted at the mid-tier SMB with a focus on storage arrays and entry-level dedicated network storage. To view the rest of this article, click here:

by Blake Eno, [email protected] Holds Its Ground as Unified Storage Leader There seems to be a lot of buzz lately around unified storage. Vendors are responding to their customers' requests for an "all-in-one" appliance by releasing products that combine NAS, SAN, and Fibre Channel in one platform. Network Appliance, which has been an active provider of unified storage solutions, today expanded its offerings in this area with the release of the midrange NetApp FAS3040. The FAS3040 is the latest addition to the NetApp Fabric-Attached Storage (FAS) systems, which are based on NetApp's Data ONTAP 7G OS and support a mixed SAN and NAS environment. The FAS3040 scales up to 126TB of capacity and features integrated remote management, integrated 4Gb Fibre Channel, and a 64-bit controller architecture with a high-bandwidth I/O design. I talked to Patrick Rogers, NetApp's vice president of products and partners, to learn how the FAS3040 stacked up against its direct competitors. Patrick pointed out than on the FAS3040's SAN competitive alignment sheet, where NetApp compares the FAS3040 against its direct competitors, the FAS3040 provides more maximum snapshot copies (127,500; the closest was around 16,000) than its competitors as well as thin-provisioning capabilities that other products don't contain. In a simulated Microsoft Exchange Server environment with Fibre Channel SAN-based storage, statistics show that the FAS3040 can handle 2000 more Exchange users than can one of the NetApp product's direct competitors. The NAS competitive alignment sheet also shows that the FAS3040 provides high availability without a standby controller, a single point of management, and RAID 6--functionality that none of the competition provides. The FAS3040 also provides greater maximum throughput (38 percent higher) and lower response time (23 percent faster). For a complete listing of the NetApp FAS3040 competitive differences, visit NetApp on the Web or call 800-443-4537. ==== New and Improved ====
