When Shared VHDX limits are removed with 2016

Q. Do I have to use VHD Set to remove the 2012 R2 restrictions related to Shared VHDX?

A. Yes. VHD Set is the new Windows Server 2016 mechanism to provide shared VHDX files and enables VHD Sets to:

  • Be dynamically resized

  • Be backed up at the host level

  • Be replicated via Hyper-V Replica

If you are using the old Shared VHDX model from upgraded VMs in 2016 those limitations will still apply until you convert to VHD Set.
