Network Load Balancing within a virtual network possibilities

Q. Can I use Windows Network Load Balancing inside a virtual network?

A. No. If Hyper-V network virtualization (NVGRE) is used then the Windows NLB feature is not supported and will not function. If load balancing functionality is required there are a number of options:

  • Use a 3rd party software load balancer either as a VM inside the network or another solution that natively understands network virtualization

  • Use a 3rd party hardware load balancer that supports NVGRE on the virtualization edge

  • Use Windows Server 2016 Network Controller that performs load balancer functions

Another option would simply be to not use network virtualization for the workload and instead use traditional VLANs.
