ASP.NET 2.0 Instant Results

Do you want to learn ASP.NET 2.0 with the help of real-worldprojects? If yes, then ASP.NET 2.0Instant Results is meant for you. It beats the approach followed bytraditional books and demonstrates the full potential of ASP.NET 2.0 with thehelp of 12 real-world projects. Each project leverages two or three core .NETFramework 2.0 classes. If one project demonstrates the use of Login controls, anotherother project demonstrates the power of GridView or DetailsView.

Separated into 12 chapters, the look and feel of eachchapter follows a uniform layout. The first few pages examine what each projectreally does, and is complemented by relevant screenshots. It s nice to see lotsof figures, as it will help you understand the real scene behind eachapplication. The second section provides a comprehensive overview about thedesign of each project, and includes supporting database diagrams. The authors alsoprovide a list of methods and properties, along with a detailed description ofeach. The next section examines the structure of the file system, then provides a comprehensive overview of the variousmodules along with relevant code snippets. The final section in each chapterprovides coverage about the installation of the project locally and on a remoteserver, with information and solutions for possible security issues you mayencounter.

The first chapter examines the creation of an online diaryand organizer. The second, third, and fourth chapters address the creation of fileshare, chat server, and an online survey applications. The fifth and sixth chapters demonstrate the development of a CustomerManagement System (CMS) and a blog. You can make use of these projects tocreate a knowledge base system with a series of FAQs and announcements for yourcustomers.

Chapter 7 explores the creation of a photo album, so youcan showcase your vacation pictures. The project included in Chapter 8 showsyou how to build a customer support site. I would like for the authors to haveincluded a separate module for a ticketing system, which are in high demand lately. You can create a robust help desk for your business if you combine andcustomize the CMS and customer support projects.

Chapters 9 and 10 examine the creation of a shopping cartand appointment booking system, respectively. Chapter 11 covers the developmentof a greeting card management system. It extensively shows the manipulation of the.NET Framework 2.0 Image class. The final project examines the creation of abug reporting system. You ll need to incorporate this project when you develop thehelp desk mentioned earlier.

The book ships with a CD, which contains the completesource code for all 12 projects. From my point of view, the publisher shouldprovide Express versions of Visual Web Developer and SQL Server 2005 on the CDso readers can customize the projects without the need to download the softwarefrom the web. An appendix addressing common errors that occur during deploymentof an ASP.NET project on a shared server would be a good addition, as well; itwould help readers troubleshoot the projects if a specific error occurs. Itwould also be great to include C# versions of each project in the next edition, and I d like to see the use of AJAXin one of the projects in the next edition of this book.
