Picks

Tip of the week: Clean up your inbox with Unroll.me

Unroll.me is an intriguing new service I've been testing this week.

Software pick of the week: Microsoft AppMagic (codenamed "Project Sienna")

Another new Microsoft tool aimed at non-programmers to try to entice them to build more Windows Store/Metro Style/immersive/modern apps: http://www.zdnet.com/microsofts-project-siena-a-metro-style-app-for-creating-windows-8-apps-7000024507/

Enterprise pick of the week: Forefront UAG

Forefront Unified Access Gateway users be aware: Your product is going to be end-of-lifed next year. But no worries if you are a Forefront Identity Manager customer. You're getting a new release (in 2015): http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-to-discontinue-forefront-unified-access-gateway-7000024424/

Bonus enterprise pick: A free e-book on System Center 2012 R2. Woohoo! Thanks, "Ask the Core" team: http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2013/12/18/free-ebook-introducing-microsoft-system-center-2012-r2.aspx

Codename pick of the week: Boston

The first-ever version of Visual Studio was codenamed "Boston" and it included the "Vegas" combination of Visual Basic/Visual C++ editors, which was a big deal at the time. Back when they still used city names for everything.

Beer pick of the week: Goose Island Bourbon County Stout

I know some craft-beer purists may shudder about Goose Island being called a "craft" any more. But this beer removes any doubt that they are still making good stuff: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1549/10672
