Microsoft releases Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 - 27 Oct 1999

Thanks to everyone that wrote in with the news that Microsoft Corporation has released Service Pack 6 (SP6) for Windows NT 4.0. And though there's been no official announcement yet, SP6 is now available from Microsoft's Web site. Windows NT 4.0 SP6 is a collection of bug fixes, updates and other enhancements for Windows NT 4.0. Like SP5, SP6 is not a required upgrade. Microsoft does, however, recommend that customers install Service Pack 4 and certain post-SP4 hot-fixes to obtain needed Y2K updates.

On that note, SP6 fixes an amazing assortment of bugs, while focusing on four key areas: extensive regression testing (to avoid the fiasco of incompatibility issues seen during earlier service pack updates), Year 2000 fixes, Euro issues, and security updates. SP6 is available in standard and high encryption (128-bit) versions for Intel x86 and Alpha platforms. It requires 60 MB of disk space and Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Server, or Enterprise Server (but not Terminal Server Edition: An SP5 release for this product is expected shortly).
