Microsoft releases Exchange Server 5.5 SP3

Microsoft Corporation has released Service Pack 3 for Exchange Server 5.5, the company's messaging server software. Exchange Server 5.5 SP3 combines various hot-fixes and new features into a single installable, offering administrators a straightforward way to ensure that they have the most up-to-date bits possible.

Exchange Server 5.5 SP3 includes the Mailbox Manager Service, which can be used to enforce corporate email retention policies, automatically deleting messages based on various criteria (I bet Microsoft had this before the antitrust trial started. --Paul). A new anti-virus interface allows third parties to attach their products to the Exchange attachment processor. In Exchange Server 5.5 SP3, the default client is now Outlook 2000, which is a tremendous free upgrade for Exchange users. Outlook for the Macintosh has also been updated but not to Office 2000 levels as of yet. In addition to these additions, Microsoft is providing a slew of internally developed and third party migration and coexistence tools.
