Microsoft Corporation has released the second beta of its Directory Synchronization Services (MSDSS) tool, which enables two-way synchronization of directory services data stored in Active Directory and Novell Directory Service (NDS). The company describes the release as "well ahead of schedule."

"Customers are asking for ways to reduce the cost and complexity of managing heterogeneous directory environments," said Keith White, director of marketing for Microsoft's business and enterprise division. "By delivering these technologies ahead of schedule, customers deploying Windows 2000 will be able to adopt Active Directory earlier to reduce their management costs."

MSDSS allows administrators to integrate Active Directory with NDS, so that shared data, such as user or printer information, can be managed from either directory. MSDSS also provides password synchronization, object mapping and synchronization, and other features.
