Microsoft Fixes Broken Internet Explorer Hotfix

Microsoft's recently released cumulative update for Internet Explorer 6 is designed to fix four security problems in the browser. The update, "MS07-069 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (942615)," was released as part of the company's regular monthly patch release process for December. But when some Windows XP SP2 users installed the update, IE began to crash due to problems with its decompression filter.

The company initially published details of a workaround that had to implemented manually by editing the Windows registry. While the workaround was effective, the need to manually edit the registry left a lot of security administrators with more burden than they expected.

Late Thursday (December 20) Microsoft finally delivered some relief by packaging the workaround, "Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB946627)"as a downloadable file that is now available via Windows Update and Automatic Updates.
