JSI Tip 8963. Program sounds do not play in Windows 2000 or Windows XP, and the DirectX Diagnostic Tool issues error '0x8878000a'?

In addition to not hearing program sounds, if you start the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (Dxdiag.exe), you receive:

Problem getting extra sound info, result code = 0x8878000a (The request failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller.)

When you select the Sound tab in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, an incorrect device is listed next to Name: in the Device area, instead of your sound card.

To resolve this problem:

Windows 2000:

1. Start / Run / mmsys.cpl / OK.

2. Select the Audio tab.

3. If the sound card that you want to use for Sound Playback is NOT the selected Preferred device select it.

4. Check the Use only preferred devices box.

5. Press Apply and OK.

6. Shutdown and restart Windows 2000.

Windows XP:

1. Start / Run / mmsys.cpl / OK.

2. Select the Audio tab.

3. If the sound card that you want to use for Sound playback is NOT the selected Default device select it.

4. Check the Use only default devices box.

5. Press Apply and OK.

6. Shutdown and restart Windows XP.
