JSI Tip 8372. When you attempt to use an administrative tool to remotely administer Windows XP SP2, you receive an error?

When you attempt to use the NET.EXE command, or use the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog, or the Find Users, Contacts, and Groups dialog, or any of the following tools, you receive an error:

CertificatesComputer Management Device Manager Disk Management Event ViewerGroup PolicyIndexing ServiceIP Security MonitorIP Security PolicyLocal Users and GroupsRemovable Storage ManagementResultant Set of PolicyServicesShared FoldersWindows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Control

The error can be one or more of the following:

Unable to access the computer . The error was: Access is denied.Unable to access the computer . The error was: The network path was not found.Failed to open Group Policy object on . You might not have appropriate rights.An object (Computer) with the following name cannot be found: .Computer  cannot be managed. The network path was not found.System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found.

If you were attempting to administer a remote Windows XP SP2 computer that is running the Windows Firewall, you must open TCP port 445 in the firewall of the remote computer.

NOTE: TCP port 445 is part of File and Printer Sharing.

To only open TCP port 445:

1. On the Windows XP SP2 computer, open a CMD.EXE window.

2. Type the following command and press Enter.

netsh firewall set portopening TCP 445 TCP445 ENABLE

3. You should receive an Ok. message.
