JSI Tip 4123. After installing a Windows 2000 Service Pack, you receive a STOP 0x0000006B upon restart?

When your Windows 2000 computer restarts after the installation of a service pack, you receive a STOP 0x0000006B:

0x0000006b 0xc0000022, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000

NOTE: After installation of a hotfix, other symptoms may occur, depending on what the hotfix contains.

If your %Systemdrive%Temp folder, or the Temp folder on the drive with the most free space, wasencrypted prior to the installation, the sub-folder that the installation created inherited this encryption. Since the System does NOT have the proper credentials for decrypting the files in the sub-folder, it can NOT continue with the boot process.

You can confirm that the above is the cause of the problem by booting to the Recovery Console and performing a DIR on all the TEMP folders. If you find -a----e- 559888 autochk.exe, the e attribute indicates that the file isencrypted.

To fix the problem:

1. Boot the computer from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.

2. Press R on the Welcome to Setup screen to repair the installation.

3. Press R on the Repair Options screen to run the emergency repair process.

4. Press M to select a Manual repair.

5. Only select the Verify Windows 2000 system files option.

6. When prompted for an ERD, press Enter if you have one, or L to search. When Setup locates the Windows 2000 installation, press Enter.

NOTE: If Setup forces a reboot immediately after the file system check, you must repeat steps 1 - 6.

7. When prompted to repair files, press A to repair all files.

You should now be able to restart Windows 2000, remove encryption from the TEMP folder, and install the service pack. You can re-enable encryption after the install.
