The COM ports that you created during the installation of a multiple-port serial adapter do not start. When you look at them in Device Manager, you receive:

Code 19 - Your registry might be corrupted.

Some virtual COM ports require that the Windows 2000 standard serial driver, Serial.sys, be started. If your computer does not have a hardware COM port, Serial.sys does not start.

To resolve the problem, enable one or more COM ports in your computers BIOS.

To enable a warning when no serial device is detected, use Regedt32 to navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesSerial and set ErrorControl to 1.

NOTE: To determine of the serial driver has loaded, use Device Manager. On the View menu, select Show Hidden Devices. Select a COM port in Ports and view its' Properties to determine if Serial.sys has been loaded.
