Microsoft Corporation officially unveiled the second public beta of Internet Explorer 5.0 Wednesday morning, with a nice new Web site detailingits new features. IE 5.0 Beta 2 is designed with three goals in mind:
Simplicity -- Search, History, and Favorites have been improved and simplified to make these functions easier and more powerful.
Automation -- Commonly repeated tasks, such as typing in URLs and filling out forms are now automated with Microsoft IntelliSense technology.
Flexibility -- In an obvious stab at Netscape, Microsoft is positioning IE 5.0 as the "browser with choice," allowing you to easily use any search, portal, or home page sites on the Web.
In addition to the Internet Explorer Web browser, the IE 5.0 also includesthe following optional components:
Outlook Express 5.0 -- Email and newsgroup access.
Windows Media Player 6.0 -- Plays all media types, including Windows Media, Real Audio/Video, QuickTime, AVI, WAV, MP3, and more.
Microsoft Chat 2.5 -- Comic strip-style live chats.
NetMeeting 2.11 -- Video teleconferencing and application sharing.
FrontPage Express 2.0 -- HTML editing.
Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (JVM) -- Though it's billed as the "Microsoft Virtual Machine" now for legal reasons, it's for running Java applets and applications.
Internet Connection Wizard -- Easy connection to the Web.
Offline Browsing Pack -- tools for viewing Web sites offline. A must for users of laptops.
Wallet 3.0 -- Allows secure online shopping.
Agent 2.0 -- Microsoft Bob meets the Internet. Hey, it works in Office.
And, as they say, so much more. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 also includes core fonts for the Web, Dynamic HTML data binding, VRML 2.0 viewer, DirectAnimation, and a host of other features.
