The Netcraft Web Server Survey is a survey of Web Server software usage onInternet-connected computers. In the latest survey, completed earlier thismonth, over 1 million commercial Web sites were contacted and the MicrosoftIIS Web server surpassed Netscape for the first time to move into secondplace behind Apache. Way behind Apache. Apache, the leading Web server, had over 356,500 servers. Microsoft IIS had 78,414 servers and Netscape had 28,418 servers. Netscape actually fell to fourth place, with the NCSA server taking third. Netscape had three servers on the list, however, "Communications," "Enterprise," and "Commerce."
Microsoft IIS was the only Web server to make a big gain in this survey,With Apache sales falling flat and Netscape and NCSA down somewhatdramatically.
Some other interesting notes from Netcraft:
Microsoft overtakes Netscape: Slightly over a year after launching its first web server, Microsoft has overtaken Netscape in terms of the overall number of internet web sites, an impressive achievement. One consolation for Netscape is the progress of Netscape-Enterprise which is still increasing its own share.
Popularity of NT continues: The percentage of NT specific servers, running one of IIS, Website, WebsitePro, Purveyor, EMWAC, Commerce- Builder, Alibaba, or WebQuest, is now 20.1%. This includes nothing in respect of the number of Netscape or Navisoft servers which may be running on NT, or for a number of servers with smaller number of sites also running on NT. We are unable to produce a figure for Netscape or Navisoft on NT, as the signature for these servers when running on NT machines is indistinguishable from the Unix versions (per chance? I think not--Paul).
In sheer market share numbers, IIS now has over 16% of the Web server market, compared to 12% for Netscape and 43% for Apache. Other notableservers include NCSA, with 7.5% and WebSite with 4%
