How to Type the Turkish Lira Symbol (₺)

Use these instructions for inserting the Turkish lira symbol (₺) in various contexts, including Microsoft Word on a PC, a Mac, and mobile devices such as iOS and Android.

While U.S. keyboards don’t automatically display the Turkish lira sign or symbol (₺), there are several ways to quickly insert this symbol into a Microsoft Word document, on a Mac, and iOS or Android devices.

How To Insert the Turkish Lira Symbol in Microsoft Word

If you’re using a PC, open your Microsoft Word document and click the cursor where you would like to insert the Turkish lira symbol. Next, hold the ALT key and type 8378 on your numeric keypad.

Another shortcut for the lira symbol is to type 20BA, then hold down the ALT key and press X. 

If you plan on using the lira symbol frequently in a Microsoft Word document, you can adjust your AutoCorrect options to automatically replace a word (such as “Lira”) with the symbol. 

How To Insert the Turkish Lira Symbol on a Mac

You can quickly find the lira symbol in your Mac’s Emoji & Symbols library. Hold down the Control, Command, and Spacebar keys to reveal the Character Viewer. On the left-hand sidebar, select Currency Symbols. Double-click the ₺ or drag the symbol into your document.

You can also type the lira symbol on a Mac by toggling to a Turkish keyboard. First, open System Preferences and click on Keyboard. Find the tab for Input Sources. Here you can add a Turkish keyboard by pressing the + sign below the sidebar and scrolling to “Turkish.” Now press the globe key at the bottom left-hand side of your physical keyboard to reveal language options. Once you’ve selected Turkish, return to your document, then hold down the Option key and the U.S. letter H to type the lira symbol.

Lastly, you can always insert the Turkish lira symbol on a Mac by using copy and paste. Highlight the ₺ in this article, then hold the Command key followed by the letter C to copy it. When you’re ready to paste, hold Command + V. 

How To Insert the Turkish Lira Symbol on a Mobile Device

To type the Turkish lira symbol on an iPhone, you will need to first add Turkish to your list of available keyboards. In Settings, click General, followed by Keyboards. The option at the bottom of your screen to Add New Keyboard will include Turkish. Once selected, go to the app where you would like to type ₺. Press and hold the globe icon at the bottom of your keyboard until you see Turkish. Next, hold down the U.S. dollar sign symbol to reveal the ₺.

To type the lira symbol on an Android device, first switch to a Turkish keyboard. Find Languages in the Systems part of your Settings. Tap Virtual keyboard, followed by Gboard. Under Languages, you can select the option for Turkish.
