Q. How much faster does Nano Server boot compared to other configuration levels?
A. A Microsoft PFE has done some performance tests and found very interesting results regarding the boot performance of Nano Server vs Server Core and the Desktop Experience configuration levels. The full article is at https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askpfeplat/2016/06/20/comparing-windows-server-2016-nano-tp5-provisioning-time-to-guicore-installation-options/ but the key times are as follows:
Nano Server - 9 second boot
Server Core - 85 second boot
Full (Desktop Experience) - 135 second boot
This shows that Nano Server boots nearly 10 times faster than even Server Core deployments. Nano Server also has substantially lower disk and memory overhead.
